The name St.-Alphonse-de-Clare came into existence in 1922. Prior to this it was commonly referred to as “Cheticamp”...a name which the inhabitants of the village were not very fond of...nevertheless...used extensively by Acadians from the other villages in Clare...and was still used my many of the elders to designate this location when I was a youth.
